While approaching the island Gramvousa and towards the end of the bay, you will see the impressive geological phenomenon which Crete, over time, rises from the west side and sinking of the east. This phenomenon created because of the devastating earthquake that took place in 66m.Ch. and 365m.Ch.. These earthquakes were caused by the movement of lithospheric plates of Africa, thus, cause the sudden raising of the western part of Crete in 6-9 meters above the sea. The ancient shoreline, visible today as a path over the rocky coast. According to scientific estimates, the geological phenomenon of rising above, continues today with largo pace.
